Useful Idiot: David Keene’s speech at the ACLU rally against the Military Commissions Act

July 12, 2007 by Christine | 910 Group | 09:07:39 | |

We reported earlier (“The Islamisation of David Keene”)on David Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union, speaking June 26 at the extremist left wing and Islamist rally sponsored by the ACLU, United for Peace and Justice, a roster of Communist Party organizations and so many others…see the rally info at “Day of Action to Restore Law and Justice.”

Here’s a partial transcript, and links to the webcast provided by the ACLU. First, to get a sense of the tone of the rally - the views with which Keene chooses to associate himself - an excerpt from the introduction by television comedian Greg Proops, Master of Ceremonies for the event:

Greg Proops (Master of Ceremonies - introduction - webcast here (repaired link: http://wm.nmmstream.net/aclu/260607/greg.asx):

…We’re always letting W meet other world leaders. I’m sure that’s such a good idea on paper. And then he actually meets the other world leaders. I’m always waiting for one of them to go, Can I talk to someone in charge? I didn’t know you were going to send the Walmart assistant manager. Sure you can talk to someone in charge, he’s lying over here on a gurney with a defibrillator stuck inside him. I’ve got him on the clapper, I’ll wake him up for you. Clap on, Mr. Cheney. Clap off. Dick Cheney’s doing such a great job as president, but what I love most about Dick Cheney is his fake window of health. Cause he’s what two green M&M’s from complete coronary meltdown. He’s half a hoho from having his aorta congeal into a hockey puck and just fire out his ass. And yet every six weeks or so he’s healthy enough they drag him out from under the White House, prop him out in front of the camera and he goes Harrumph. Then they shoot him back under the White House where he’s lying suspended in a cryogenic chamber filled with the liquid from the endocrine glands of certain ferrets so he’s always bathed in a youthful soothing enzyme bath…

…I’m very pleased to introduce our next speaker because he is the chair of the American Conservative Union. Which proves that our cause here today and what we’re talking about knows no political boundaries. That’s right. The nation’s oldest conservative grassroots political organization, please welcome David Keene.

“Thank you.

I’m here today because as a conservative I believe that ours is the greatest and freest nation on the face of the earth, and because I want to do what I can to make sure that my children and their children will be able to say the same.

I’m here today because as a conservative I believe we can defeat our enemies without compromising the values that have made this nation great.

As citizens we owe it to ourselves to support realistic measures needed to protect our nation. But men and women of good will regardless of party or ideological orientation have to work together to make certain that our rights survive the stresses of the war in which we are today engaged, and the zeal of those who in fighting it sometimes forget that it is to preserve these very rights that our fighting men and women go to battle.

My friends, no right is more essential to individual liberty than the right to be free from unjust detention at the hands of government. It’s a right that predates our constitution itself by nearly 500 years. It’s little wonder that habeas corpus was described by Alexander Hamilton as one of the greatest securities to liberty and republicanism or that the United States Supreme Court has found that even non-citizen prisoners in places like Guantanomo should be entitled to challenge the legality of their detention in court.

But last year in the face of that decision Congress passed the Military Commissions Act, eliminating the habeas rights of any person the President declares an enemy combatant. A circumvention of Constitutional principle with potentially dangerous consequences for all of us. We as Americans must do all we can to make sure those we imprison for the duration of a war that could go on indefinitely are in fact our enemies.

We are not a nation that imprisons the innocent. That’s why we are here today, to demand that our elected representatives restore the habeas rights of those we seek to imprison and remind those directing the war on terror to remember just what it is they’re fighting to defend.

Just to review three facts of interest about Mr. Keene, who claims to speak for all American Conservatives, facts of particular interest to members of the American Conservative Union and another group whose board he recently joined, the National Rifle Association:

1. In his day job, Keene is a managing associate at the Carmen Group, Washington, DC lobbying firm. He is on the lobbying teams representing special interests (corporations, states and associations) in International, Homeland [security], Procurement Solutions, Postal, and Education areas. One of his clients is Algeria.

2. 5/2006 Gulf News: “A US delegation led by CAIR officials yesterday held discussions with Al Habtoor group chairman Khalaf Al Habtoor and other in Dubai about a $50-million public relations campaign that the US group has launched in the US to change negative public perceptions about Islam…”

3. Coming up on Tuesday, July 17 - and if you’re in the Washington, DC area please try to attend and videotape or audiotape this event - as emailed by CAIR:

CONSERVATIVE LEADER TO SPEAK ON ‘ISLAMOPHOBIA’ PANEL

The panel will address the increasing anti-Muslim rhetoric within the conservative movement in the United States, focusing on the negative impact of such views on religious tolerance in America and on relations with the Muslim world.

Presenters:

* David Keene, President, American Conservative Union
* Parvez Ahmed, Chairman, Council on American-Islamic Relations

So, Keene is working hard not only to eliminate the Military Commissions Act, but also to apply the false, politically correct, bullying label of “Islamophobic” to any ACU or NRA members who dare to criticize Islamists such as his co-presenters CAIR, undicted co-conspirators in alleged funding of terrorism, political supporters of Hamas, leaders of the “litigation jihad” against airplane passengers in the 6 imams case.

In his speech to his new friends in the ACLU, Code Pink, NOW and United for Peace and Justice (which contains a motley variety of Communist Party offshoots), Keene stated:

I’m here today because as a conservative I believe we can defeat our enemies without compromising the values that have made this nation great.

Apparently those values do not include permitting his fellow conservatives - in fact, any American citizens - to criticize Islamist groups such as CAIR. He goes on to say to the ACLU et al:

We are not a nation that imprisons the innocent.

But Keene’s joint presentation on July 17, partnering the very well-funded CAIR, suggests that he thinks we are a nation that should refuse the innocent their first amendment rights. So be careful in his presence - watch your “rhetoric” and your “views,” lest Keene find you guilty of the dreaded “Islamophobia”. Because maybe we are, in his view, a nation that imprisons the politically incorrect - or at least, those who are politically less well-funded.
The question is whether he’ll stop with trying to commit CAIRicide on the First Amendment. Will Keene’s new role in the National Rifle Association mean a limitation on our Second Amendment rights next - all in the name of his newly adopted political correctness?

Just subscribe to the CAIR email alerts. They’re clearly the best way to track David Keene’s schedule of public appearances.

[…] The source also alleged that the email included this line: “If you are interested in signing on to this letter, please contact David Keene at keened@carmengroup.com with your signature and logo.” That would be David Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union and also a lobbyist with the Carmen Group in Washington, D.C. Keene spoke recently at a rally sponsored by ACLU and the extreme leftwing “United for Peace and Justice,” opposing Bush administration policies for homeland defense. For more on Keene’s retreat from conservatism into Islamism, see here and here. […]

[…] Lest we forget, it has been alleged that lobbyists for this bill are “conservatives” Grover Norquist, founder of the Islamic Free Market Institute (copies of canceled checks funding it from Saudis, Kuwait, Safa Trust and Qatar here) and David Keene, lobbyist for the Carmen Group and new friend of the ACLU. We cannot confirm this information. […]
